Der Ton macht die Musik . Offener Brief der GMD- und Chefdirigent*innenkonferenz
It's not what you say, but how you say it. . Open letter of the conference of General Music Directors and Chief Conductors

by GMD- und Chefdirigent*innenkonferenz (02 Nov 2020)
Original source: concerti

The theaters and concert halls have lived up to their responsibility to the public with excellent hygiene concepts. The reward, however, is not solidarity, but the renewed "muting" of culture, decreed by a state that does not live up to its responsibility for pupils, who nevertheless travel in crowded buses and trains and are taught in poorly ventilated classrooms every day.
The GMD and the Chief Conductor's Conference is very angry, as the promises of support in recent months can only be understood as lip service in view of the recent lockdown and t he degradation to a recreational facility. The ruthlessness not so much towards the institutions as towards the people working in and for them, who are to some extent robbed of their identity, is very painful and cannot be compensated with money.

Solo-Selbständige: Unter Verdacht
Freelancers: Under suspicion

by Karin Finkenzeller (14 Jun 2020)
Original source: Zeit

The uncertainty related to the application for emergency aid is affecting many creative artists and cultural workers. As the regulations were initially all but transparent, it was not clearly communicated that it is not possible to apply for entrepreneurial salaries in every German federal state. Now, there hangs the accusation in the air, that artists are obtaining benefits from the state by fraud, which the state awarded far too carelessly. Rainer Bode, cultural advisor in Münster, and a few fellow campaigners have therefore sent an appeal for remediation to the B undestag Committee for Culture.

»Erwerbstätige dritter Klasse« . Soloselbstständige fühlen sich von Koalition im Stich gelassen

by Anja Müller, Frank Specht (07 Jun 2020)
Original source: Handelsblatt

Many solo self-employed people in the cultural and creative industries had high hopes for the new economic stimulus package of the German government. These remained largely unfulfilled. As before, the cost of living and thus an entrepreneur's salary cannot be claimed. For many self-employed persons, the only option left is to apply for the basic social care 'Hartz IV'. Last Friday, the Federal Council passed a resolution to support self-employed artists and media workers. It demands that at least they be granted a flat monthly subsidy to compensate for the lo ss of income.

Zeitenwende in der Klassik . Konzertveranstalter in der Coronakrise
The turn of an era in classical music . Concert management in Corona times

by Karsten Witt, Eckhard Roelcke (08 May 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk Kultur

The classical music scene is facing a structural change as a result of the Corona crisis. Eckhard Roelcke talks with music manager Karsten Witt about the scenarios and what opportunities the crisis might bring. He is concerned that not only the event management for concerts will change radically after the crisis. He also predicts that all artists, ensembles and orchestras that are not subsidized will hardly be able to hold their own on the market in the future.

Sehr geehrte Frau Staatsministerin Professor Monika Grütters
Dear Miss Minister of State for Culture Professor Monika Grütters

by Lisa Batiashvili, Matthias Goerne, Thomas Hengelbrock, Anne-Sophie Mutter, René Pape, Christian Thielemann (19 Apr 2020)
Original source: offener Brief

Representing all the well-known and unknown artists, the signatories to the open letter turn to Monika Grütters for support. They are disappointed with the offer of the Minister of State for Culture that artists can apply for social welfare and that there are few other offers of help for the cultural sector. This reveals that art is understood as a luxury for good times and is not equated to other industries.
