#allesdichtmachen: Die infektiösen Folgen der Infodemie
#allesdichtmachen: Die infectious consequences of the infodemic

by Markus Gabriel (26 Apr 2021)
Original source: Frankfurter Rundschau

The philosopher misses too much the humanities that reflect media and artistic discourses such as those triggered by the actors' videos of #allesdichtmachen. He sees the quality of artistic statements precisely in addressing mechanisms and stereotypes in relation to Corona. Instead of classifying and analysing, he accuses the media of being too willing to let social media such as "some arbitrary Twitter account lead the thought process" - infodemics as twittocracy.

So gefährlich war die Kunst noch selten . Aber der Kultur-Shutdown trifft uns alle
Art has rarely been so dangerous . But the culture shutdown affects us all

by Roman Bucheli (30 Dec 2020)
Original source: NZZ

Culture is currently banned from public space. This not only puts the livelihoods of cultural workers at risk, but is also a drastic experience for the community. The community lacks a place in which to experiment, formulate dissent, or test out ideas. Unlike in politics, the aim is not to assert one's own position, but to stimulate a discourse that forms a critical public sphere and thus drives the development of society. If it allows the individual to see the world with different eyes and to face the demands of everyday life more equanimously, an important task of culture is the humanization of society. Although art can also be enjoyed in isolation, it requires public space in order to help shape it. Karl Jaspers defined the public sphere as a prerequisite for truth, since the individual can only face up to debate in the public sphere. His disciple Hannah Arendt even spoke of the »venture of the public sphere«, since humanity can never be won in solitude. It takes public space to build a network of thoughts and relationships that encounter ideas from others and are considered before an audience. This is how a many-voiced conversation emerges. We are currently experiencing in online meetings that this is not possible in virtual space. The individual can cope with the absence of this analog exchange for a while, but society will break down in the long run.

Schauspielhaus-Intendant Stemann: «Uns ist die Fähigkeit abhandengekommen, mit anderen Menschen mitzufühlen»

by Julia Stephan, Nicolas Stemann (22 Dec 2020)
Original source: Tagblatt

Working creatively and productively with the resistances that the Corona crisis means for theater professionals, that is the trademark of Nicolas Stemann, the co-director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich. Already last spring, he accompanied life during the pandemic critically and humorously at the same time with columns for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and the 'Corona Passion Plays'. In his home office he wrote songs for the Passion Plays, as it was not possible for him to discuss developments during the suspended rehearsals. Nevertheless, he also sees the nega tive sides of the pandemic. Workflows have to be rethought, premieres postponed, casts minimized, schedules rescheduled - of course, this also means a great burden. On the one hand, this increases the workload for many, and on the other hand, it is extremely stressful, especially for actors, if they cannot rehearse with a goal in mind. This is one of the reasons why the Schauspielhaus Zurich very successfully offers a live-streamed performance once a week.
It is important for Stemann to emphasize that the theaters consider the closure of the houses to be an important contribution to the fight against the pandemic. His only concern is that it may have too little impact by placing too few restrictions in other areas. With regard to the concerns and problems of people during the pandemic, he considers art and culture to be extremely important in order to negotiate the open questions together in a discussion space and to find an outlet for emotions. The fact that this is not available at the moment, but that instead emotions such as hatred and incomprehension are acted out in social networks, is for him one of the major problems of the theater closures.

Mein Europa: Ohne Kunst und Kultur wird's still
My Europe: Without art and culture it will be quiet.

by Carmen-Francesca Banciu (20 Nov 2020)
Original source: Deutsche Welle

With the reference "Without art and culture it will be quiet", cultural workers are currently drawing attention to the existential threat to the cultural industry posed by the corona lockdown, an industry that was already precarious before the crisis.  But what does this mean in concrete terms?
The writer Carmen-Francesca Banciu makes it clear in her column at Deutsche Welle with an appeal by Nancy Bass Wyden, the owner of the New York Strand Book Shop on the corner of 12th Street and Broadway: »We need help.« Institutions like the world -famous antiquarian bookstore are facing the end of their existence in the face of the consequences of Corona if they do not receive support. This does not only apply to the Strand Book Shop but also to the »Dussmann in Berlin, Dom Knigi in St. Petersburg, Dominicans in Maastricht, Libreria Aqua Alta in Venice, Atlantic Books on Santorini, Livraria Lello & Irmao in Porto, Desperate Literatur in Madrid, Carturesti in Bucharest« - the list could be extended by many, many more bookstores, cultural department stores or record stores. All of these are places where not only books were sold, but also meeting places for authors, musicians, artists, readers, critics and all other culture enthusiasts. Places which, because of their special atmosphere, became the backdrop for films and whose charisma not only represents the European spirit, but which also became a spiritual home for their visitors. This cannot be captured by streaming music or theater performances. This is why the statement »Without art and culture it will be quiet« is so important at the moment: When the world becomes quiet, according to Carmen-Francesca Banciu, it becomes dark within us. This must be avoided.

Jagt den Krimi in die Luft! . Literatur und Corona
Blow up the thriller! . Literature and Corona

by Simone Buchholz (28 Oct 2020)
Original source: Zeit

Crises freeze time for a moment and divide our experience into a before and after. One of the central tasks of art is to tell about such times of crisis. One genre for which the crisis is a core element is the crime fiction, novel, and so it is not surprising that the German crime novelist Simone Buchholz reflects on a new orientation of the genre in the weekly newspaper »Die Zeit«.
In order to finally gain a firm place in the genre of society novels, the crime fiction would have to throw overboard a whole range of its previous characteristics, above al l a simplistic narrative and the German idyll. Instead, the new crime fiction must shake at the genre's boundaries, leave every safe haven and devote itself to the completely unknown. Only the individual can be at the center of such a new novel. The characteristics that Buchholz now lists are the human striving for knowledge, his sense of solidarity and an idea of social cohesion. This reads as if Faust was crossed with Gretchen. The new crime fiction novel should also be a contemporary witness and, in addition to documenting the state of the crisis, it should also document how the crisis was withstood.
Is the genre abolishing itself? asks the experienced crime novelist at the end of her dream of a new crime fiction novel. We will know when her new novel is published.

Sprachmacht und Sachertorte . Österreichische Literatur in der Coronakrise
Power of language and the Sacher cake . Austrain literature during corona crisis

by Irene Binal (25 Sep 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk Kultur

In a feature on the current situation of Austrian literature, the topic of Corona, which is currently a major concern for all creative artists, should not be missing, in addition to the great role models, the special features of the publishing landscape and the coffee house culture in Vienna.
The author Michael Stavarič, who accompanies the journalist Irene Binal through Vienna, is particularly affected by the crisis, as his current novel "Fremdes Licht" (Strange Light) was published in spring. About 30 lectures were cancelled, interviews and meetings w ere missed. After four years of work, there is now a lack of income and the author is thinking about whether life as a freelance writer can still afford to live in the next few years.
Despite comparable hardship, many Austrian authors do not feel that state support is adequate. With the project "Work instead of Alms" Marlen Schachinger wanted to set an example in this situation. Through a crowdfunding campaign she has raised about 20,000 €. Most of the money came from readers and is used to pay not only for the anthology itself but above all for the fees of the about 20 authors.

Von Zombies, Würmern und Corona auf dem Land . Lola Randl über „Die Krone der Schöpfung“
About zombies, worms and Corona in the countryside . Lola Randl on the „The Pride of Creation“

by Lola Randl, Frank Meyer (28 Aug 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk Kultur

Lola Randel wrote one of the first pandemic novels with her novel "The Pride of Creation". The novel is set in a village and deals with life with and in nature, as well as with how to deal with the pandemic, which breaks into the village idyll width townspeople fleeing in their vacation homes. Whether the first-person narrator is actually infected remains open. The novel consists of short, small chapters, which are listed again in a register at the end. The almost lexical chapters structure the fictional text and help the narrator to grasp the situation. The st ructure of the lexica also provides the narrator with support, however, as she gets lost in her research on the Internet. Randel thus finds a narrative picture of how many people at the beginning of the pandemic obtained information on the Internet in a patchwork of images.
The narrator is working on a zombie story, which is why the undead play an important role in the narrative.  They have a metaphorical role, since they stand for the virus as the smallest zombie, the smallest undead. In the interview, the author herself is surprised that the zombie story has taken up such a large space in the novel at the end.
The motto of the novel is a poem from the baroque era. Mortality, which the baroque author Andreas Gryphius deals with, is a counter position to the repression of death in the present.  In dealing with the transience of life, the author poses the question of how to explain society's reactions to the current threat in relation to the pandemic.
The interview gives the impression that Randel's narrative is controlled by emotions and experiences. Themes and motifs are imposed by the narrative and are given space in the novel. Whether the handling of the pandemic in the narrative is just as unreflected as the author would like to make us believe, the readers must probably find out for themselves.

Martin Meyers Buch »Corona« – die Pandemie wird Literatur
Martin Meyer's book "Corona" - the pandemic becomes literature

by Christoph Leibold, Martin Meyer (19 Jul 2020)
Original source: BR24

The Swiss journalist and longtime NZZ columnist Martin Meyer has published with  »Corona« one of the first Corona novels at Kein & Aber publisher. The text was developed from an idea during the lockdown. For the author, the subject of Corona is particularly interesting - as he describes it in an interview - because it asks basic questions and throws the individual back on his or her own ego. The examination of such existential situations is a characteristic of literature.
The old main character Matteo is also in a lockdown. The name of the dis ease that made the state of emergency necessary is not mentioned. Matteo reads epidemic literature to deal with his situation. The literature from the Bible to Albert Camus leads to philosophical activity. Martin Meyer understands the fact that the novel itself is entitled  »Corona« as a reference to man as the pride of creation (in German: crown of creation). But the crown, according to Meyer, can also be seen as a crown of thorns, considering how fragile human existence is.
Asked whether literature does not need distance from an event in order to be able to reflect on it, Meyer makes a different claim. Literature can also emerge from personal affection.

»Literatur ist ein Lebensmittel!« . Erste Lesungen nach der Corona-Krise
»Literature is a nutrient!« . First readings after the Corona crisis

by Börsenblatt Online (19 Jun 2020)
Original source: Börsenblatt

The first readings after the lockdown have found an enthusiastic audience, but the booksellers still want to wait until autumn before organising new readings, because from an economic point of view the events are a risk. Despite good sales figures at the book table and sold-out readings, large rooms have to be rented and the supervision of the event is personnel-intensive due to the hygiene concept.

Was wir im Lockdown über das Digitale gelernt haben

by Anika Meier (02 Jun 2020)
Original source: Monopol

The corona crisis has accelerated the shift to the digital world. Art exhibitions were also presented online in times of lockdown. If there is no other choice, even these institutions who have tended to avoid online media are now turning to social media to communicate and exchange ideas. In her column, Anika Meier examines what we have learned with regard to the digital world during the crisis, presenting various activities of the recent months, from livestreams via Instagram to online viewing rooms and augmented reality. In doing so, she urges art critics to think about new standards for evaluating art on the Net. Naive euphoria or unreflected criticism of the fact that virtual exhibitions cannot replace real museum visits do not do justice to either the artistic-curatorial claim or the medium.
