Event- und Konzertveranstalter in Not . Aktion „Night of Light“
Event and concert organizer in distress . Campaign: „Night of Light“

by Tom Koperek, Stephan Karkowsky (22 Jun 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk

On the evening of 22 June 2020 concert halls, theatres and live clubs are taking part throughout Germany: Their buildings illuminated in red did draw attention to the problems of the event industry at the "Night of Light". Since the event industry is a very heterogeneous branch of industry with over 150 subsections, it is difficult to make them visible in the political discourse.

Interne Anweisung: »Schauspieler über 60 bitte eliminieren«
Internal directive: »Please eliminate actors over 60«

by Stefan Grund (17 Jun 2020)
Original source: Welt

In the last days, a letter has become known that the production company Saxonia Media has sent to the scriptwriters of the popular series "In aller Freundschaft" commissioned by the first German national TV channel ARD. In it they were asked to use actors over 60 in a very reduced way or even not to cast them at all. After there have been only rumours up to now that production companies encourage their script writers to remove old characters, this is the first case in which such a procedure has been proven. The German association of actors 'Berufsverband Sc hauspiel" is investigating all suspicious cases, not only to clarify them, but also to warn against such action.

Künstler schweigen für faire Bezahlung
Artists fall silent for fair payment

by Lukas Möschl (17 Jun 2020)
Original source: ORF

On Wednesday evening, Salzburg artists stood in silence on the Residenzplatz. With their demonstration they wanted to point out the situation of the cultural sector in the Corona crisis.  In contrast to Germany and France, the artists in Austria feel abandoned by the black-green federal government, because it is currently hardly possible for freelancers to receive unemployment benefits or a minimum income.

Leaving the Corona crisis behind with a . Can the federal government's billion-euro package save culture?

by Skadi Jennicke, Ulrich Khuon, Dagmar Schmidt, Wolfgang Schmidt, Olaf Zimmermann, Hans Dieter Heimendahl (12 Jun 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk Kultur

As part of the economic stimulus package, the German Federal Government has provided one billion euros for the protection of the infrastructure in the cultural and creative industries with its "Restart Culture" programme. In the new format of Deutschlandfunk, the "Cultural Policy Salon", representatives from various sectors are discussing about the significance of the government's cultural package in the current situation and how the exit strategy from the crisis could look like for the sector. The participants agree that the economic stimulus pac kage is an important signal for the sector, but it is still seen as a form of emergency aid. The crisis is far from over, many cultural institutions are still in test mode. As the municipalities and institutions are still reacting to the crisis, they hope for some deceleration, so that there is again time for a reflective approach to the demands of the new everyday life.

Die vergessenen Selbstständigen
The forgotten self-employed

by Jagoda Marinic (12 Jun 2020)
Original source: Mannheimer Morgen

On the occasion of the economic stimulus package to be adopted by the cabinet, Jagoda Marinic is considering the role of the solo self-employed and freelancers, who are not considered in this package. This professional group in particular has been courted by politicians in recent years, but now it has no lobby to defend it and is being forgotten. It consists of artists, teachers, journalists and creative entrepreneurs who pursue their goals with passion and willingness to take risks and establish new working models. Out of solidarity with the community they have put thei r work on hold, now society must not forget them.

Eight ways museums could make most of the coronavirus crisis . Failure to seize this opportunity to make changes would be a graver error than any breach of etiquette

by Adrian Ellis (11 Jun 2020)
Original source: The Art Newspaper

This article by Adrian Ellis draws from conversations in early May 2020 with museum directors in New York, Salem, Buffalo and Kansas City. They all agree to use the crisis to redefine the tasks of a museum by the following opportunities:
- Revaluating a new metrics of success
- Reviewing the strategies for exhibitions and education programmes
- Local social binding as «community anchors» by engaging the neighbourhood and deepening local partnerships
- Nurturing the virtual community
- Recalibrating the (conservative) organisati onal culture establishing mission and values
- Harnessing art to reimagine society

Das Eine-Milliarde-Euro-Baby
The One-Billion-Euro-Baby

by Dirk Peitz (05 Jun 2020)
Original source: Zeit

Dirk Peitz explores the question of how the crisis of culture in Germany can be described exactly and who is currently bearing the costs that arise in the cultural sector. The »latent lack of systemic relevance« could become a problem for the industry if the economic crisis becomes more severe or lasts longer than currently expected. While the approximately 1.7 million employees are currently an argument in favour of artists, cultural funding could be discontinued very quickly in times of tight budgets.

Warum wir das Kino brauchen
Why we need the cinema

by Edgar Reitz (04 Jun 2020)
Original source: Die Zeit

In the digital age there are hardly any rooms of privacy left.  Like few other places, the cinemas of today offer an offline space in which we are completely with ourselves. Despite the film experience in the community we feel here as individuals. The medium of cinema must seize this opportunity, design the spaces accordingly and network them with the other cultural offerings in a city. In this way, new event concepts can be created that make the cinema attractive again as a space for experience.

Schauspielerin Stephanie Lexer über Art ist relevant . Wie wichtig ist Kunst?
Actress Stephanie Lexer on the initiative Art is relevant . How essential is art?

by Stephanie Lexer (31 May 2020)
Original source: Nachrichten München

Art and culture are constantly present in our everyday life. Whether it is the music we listen to on the radio, the series we watch in the evening or the book we read. During the Corona crisis many of the actors felt to exist under the radar. Not only were art and culture not considered to be systemically relevant, individuals also felt that their work was not appreciated. The initiative "Art is relevant" sees this as a symptom of our time, which is reinforced by the Corona crisis. The appreciation for art and culture is declining more and more in the present. This must change! At the same time, however, the industry must also become aware that it has a decisive influence on the way society thinks and acts and thus also has the responsibility to think about what our world should look like.
The actress Stephanie Lexer is co-initiator of the initiative "Art is relevant", which, however, does not want to see itself as a pure Corona initiative, but will also be committed to the interests of art and culture beyond that. One example is the critical questioning of online offerings. Often the impression arises that the work of artists of all disciplines can be regarded as a hobby that can easily be made available online. However, this is also a profession with which one has to earn a living.
