Quo vadis ars?

The situation in the cultural sector has been described and discussed in numerous interviews, corona diaries, comments and reports in the past few weeks. Our annotated collection of currently 193 sources gathers voices from different sectors and media. This creates a picture of the cultural landscape in crisis, whose temporal transformation can be explored interactively via a dedicated tag cloud.

In Bavaria the hygiene rules are more restrictive than in any other federal state. Not only maximum distances between visitors in the Munich Philharmonic Hall are adhered to, but it is also not permitted to remove masks during the concert. It remains to be seen whether this is due to the "obviously most useless Minister of Art" who does not have confidence in the discipline of high culture audiences. But the 40 or so musicians under the direction of Valery Gergiev are not letting the restrictions affect them.

On the evening of 22 June 2020 concert halls, theatres and live clubs are taking part throughout Germany: Their buildings illuminated in red did draw attention to the problems of the event industry at the "Night of Light". Since the event industry is a very heterogeneous branch of industry with over 150 subsections, it is difficult to make them visible in the political discourse.

The art world expanded beyond the limits of sustainability even before Covid 19 states art dealer and curator Jane Kallir in her comment. A few big galleries and auction houses have taken over the art world and turning it into a big commerce for the rich jetset. Diversity changed to a “limited market of the bankable recognisable few” (Melanie Gerlis) pushing the smaller galleries out of the market.
For Kallir this trend to commercialisation was initiated in the 1980’s expanding in the last decades massively the art market and turning art works on the one side into a speculative object for short-term profit and on the other side into crowd-pleasing entertainments. An ideal post-pandemic world art would be no longer such a Disneyland for the rich.

The first readings after the lockdown have found an enthusiastic audience, but the booksellers still want to wait until autumn before organising new readings, because from an economic point of view the events are a risk. Despite good sales figures at the book table and sold-out readings, large rooms have to be rented and the supervision of the event is personnel-intensive due to the hygiene concept.

The »latent lack of systemic relevance« could become a problem for the industry if the economic crisis becomes more severe or lasts longer than currently expected. While the approximately 1.7 million employees are currently an argument in favour of artists, cultural funding could be discontinued very quickly in times of tight budgets.

The corona crisis has accelerated the shift to the digital world. Art exhibitions were also presented online in times of lockdown. If there is no other choice, even these institutions who have tended to avoid online media are now turning to social media to communicate and exchange ideas. In her column, Anika Meier examines what we have learned with regard to the digital world during the crisis, presenting various activities of the recent months, from livestreams via Instagram to online viewing rooms and augmented reality. In doing so, she urges art critics to think about new standards for evaluating art on the Net. Naive euphoria or unreflected criticism of the fact that virtual exhibitions cannot replace real museum visits do not do justice to either the artistic-curatorial claim or the medium.

Around 30 employees at the Aachen Theater had Covid 19 in March. Even though the state government of NRW allows the theaters to reopen on May 31, a regular program will only be played in Aachen in compliance with the hygiene rules at the beginning of the new season. Then only smaller productions will be shown in front of a significantly reduced audience.
The general director Michael Schmitz-Aufterbeck is irritated in the conversation that the politicians have not previously sought a dialogue with the persons engaged in the cultural sector. He describes in great de tail the difficulty of implementing the requirements for his employees, as the rooms are particularly limited on back stage and are sometimes very narrow.

Beside aviation, tourism and gastronomy, the pandemic has hit culture hardest. The cultural and creative industries are still waiting for the saving stimulus package that will compensate for the consequences and maintain the infrastructure. What is already foreseeable: the damage in the cultural sector is gigantic and it will have long-term effects. Part of the problem is the large number of employees who live on the edge of the subsistence level and have no reserves. This raises the fundamental cultural-political question of how to improve the situation after the crisis .

In Hamburg, the theatres are currently not yet allowed to reopen. However, in preparation for the new season, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the Thalia Theater have resumed rehearsals. Here, too, the rules of hygiene are strictly observed. This has an impact on the plays, in which more distance must now be maintained between the actors. Jan Bosse, director at the Thalia Theater, understands the alienation, which he did not choose himself, as an aesthetic challenge, which produces new solutions during rehearsals. These are also understood by the audience, since everyone can understand and interpret the collective narrative Corona. As an unique experience, he considers the Corona conditions as a challenge. However, the rules of hygiene should not be set in the long run, because especially the distance on stage can quickly lead to boredom.

Facing arts is a projet by STORM.

STORM is an acronym playing with the initials by Miriam Seidler & Tim Otto Roth, who are hit both by the Corona crisis. Dr. Miriam Seidler is a scholar in German literature and currently works as specialist in public relations. Dr. Tim Otto Roth is a scholar in art and science history and works as a conceptual artist and composer. He is known for his huge projects in public space, cooperations with leading scientific institutions and his immersive sound and light installations. Miriam and Tim collaborate regularly for years. With facing arts they reaslize their first common art project.
